Tree Clearance Below the 39 Steps

Proposed tree clearance - before and after

These photographs were taken by Tony Wyard. The top Photograph shows the beginning of the project to link the heath on the top of Windmill Hill down the thirty nine steps to the Barrows. This link will connect and expand the areas of open heathland at Sullington Warren. The bottom Photograph show what we are going to achieve over the next two years.

We will remove a small amount of Scots pine trees between (seventeen and twenty trees). The timber will be taken to Amberley Working Museum, Where it will be used to demonstrate their sawmill in production by converting the round timber into usable square timber for use on projects at the museum such as railway sleepers, building and fencing.

All the work that has been done over the past ten years to restore and link the heathland has been partially funded under the Countryside Stewardship Scheme. We intend to continue this work over the next ten years under the Higher Level Stewardship Scheme, and with help of the Sandgate Conservation Society.
