Happy New Year!

Come along and help take care of this Site of Special Scientific Interest.

The plan for this coming Saturday is to work in the area between the Woodpecker Lane and Trinity Methodist Church entrances.  The work will mainly involve loading a bonfire with material resulting from scrub clearing in the area before Christmas but there is also likely to be some more removal of invasive tree species, such as Scots Pine and Birch, to allow the specialist heathland plants, such as the heather, to flourish and support the rare heathland animals, including insects and reptiles.  Lowland heathland is an important habitat but only about 20% of Britain’s lowland heathland remains from what there was around 200 years ago.  Saplings and trees will be removed by pulling where possible – either hand pulling or we may have the use of ‘tree poppers’ to lever out small trees, roots and all.  We will also have the use of saws and loppers.

Please wear appropriate clothing – long sleeves and trousers to protect arms and legs from the spiky vegetation would be a good idea – you may also want to consider some eye protection. Also, be aware that sparks from the bonfire may damage clothing, especially any made using synthetic material such as fleece.  The wearing of sturdy shoes is also recommended. Also bring some refreshments for the mid-morning break.

Any necessary tools will be provided but it is recommended that you bring your own gloves.
We will be led by Chloe from the National Trust.
Start time is 09:30 – please be prompt.
Look for the NT vehicle parked on The Green or in the heathland area between the Woodpecker Lane and Trinity Church entrances.  The approximate what3words location will be https://w3w.co.incisions.correctly.loss
Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult unless by prior arrangement.
Please check the Sandgate Conservation Society Facebook page and/or website in case of any last minute cancellation.
Finish at 12 noon.
