This Saturday we shall be bracken bashing around The Green at Sullington Warren. Bracken shades and crowds out other vegetation such as the heather which is such an important plant on the Warren, so although bracken itself also has some benefit to wildlife it does need to be kept under control.
The best control method is to ‘bash’ the bracken to break and crush its stem, mimicking the action of grazing animals. This damages the plant causing it to exude sap and thereby weakens the plant.
Please wear appropriate clothing – no shorts please as we are now in tick season and there is a possibility of getting a tick bite. Also, wear stout shoes with good ankle support as the ground is uneven in places. We recommend that you bring your own gloves – bracken bashing involves hitting the bracken with a stick or similar and this can be hard on the hands.
We take a break at around 11 am – bring your own refreshments.
All are welcome – you do not need to be a member of Sandgate Conservation Society to join our conservation mornings, though persons under 18 year old should be accompanied by an adult unless by prior arrangement with the Society.
Meet on The Green at 9:30am – please be prompt. You should see the NT vehicle parked on the Green – that is the assembly point.
