Come along and help take care of this Site of Special Scientific Interest.

The task this Saturday will be bracken bashing.  Bracken can hamper the growth of the heather and thereby degrade the quality of the rare lowland heath habitat at Sullington Warren.

Bracken is bashed – crushed under foot if small or hit with a stick to break the stem if bigger – as damaging the plant weakens its roots so it grows less vigorously so that eventually, after carrying out bracken bashing over a period of years, the heathland is improved as the amount of bracken is reduced.

Please wear appropriate clothing. The wearing of sturdy shoes is recommended. Wearing shorts is not recommended because of the risk of ticks.  Also you will need to wear gloves – to help protect your hands from chafing from the stick you will use to ‘bash’ the bracken.  Also bring some refreshments for the mid-morning break.  Any necessary tools will be provided but it is recommended that you bring your own gloves.

We will be led by Lee from the National Trust.  Meet on The Green
Start time is 09:30 – please be prompt.
Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult unless by prior arrangement.
Please check the Sandgate Conservation Society Facebook page and/or website in case of any last minute changes or cancellation.
